Ligament & Muscle Sprain

Soft tissue injuries (as opposed to hard tissue or bony injuries) occur when forces are applied that exceed those that muscles or ligaments are capable of resisting. Initially an inflammatory response is generated as part of the body’s healing response and this should be managed by the RICE regime (rest, ice, compression bandage, elevation) over the first 48 hours. Appropriate rehabilitation should commence as soon as possible, as movement and load play a critical role in facilitating the healing process and ensuring strong, quality repair. Advice can also be given about what types of activities can be safely undertaken whilst recovery is occurring and when a return to full unrestricted activity can be expected.
